Abstract

The experiment of levitating a ping pong ball with a vertically oriented hair dryer is a classic and significant demonstration in fluid dynamics. By using an upward air jet, the ball can be lifted and maintained in a stationary suspended position. The core principle is straightforward: when the upward force exerted by the air stream balances the downward gravitational force acting on the ball, it remains suspended in equilibrium. It clearly demonstrates Bernoulli’s theory, showing how the relationship between flow velocity and pressure can produce a lift force and ensure that an object can be suspended steadily. It forms the foundation for applications in various industries, such as airplane lift and aerospace engineering. However, there are also some limitations, including scale effects, idealized conditions (e.g., turbulence), and simplified models. Additionally, the measurements in the experiment are quite complex, and the experimental values cannot be extremely precise. According to the experiment, the ball can remain steadily suspended in the specially designated region. As the flow velocity increases, the height of the ball also rises. Moreover, when the flow is disrupted, the suspended ball moves up and down. Yet, after the disruption, it returns to its original position and remains stable. This demonstrates dynamic stability and self-correction after minor perturbations due to pressure differentials. This research has a strong influence on future developments because it involves many fields, such as sports science and aerospace engineering. Overall, the experiment is not only an interesting demonstration but also a vital illustration of fundamental theory.
